Metal Fabrication Solutions

Coldwell-Wilcox has produced all types of enclosures for machine tools, plastic injection molding equipment, presses and material handling equipment. Coldwell-Wilcox’s CNC press breaks, laser machining, burn table and machining center capabilities answer the need for very close tolerance work and production documentation.

Coldwell-Wilcox offers a complete turnkey product that includes design and manufacturing of sheet metal enclosures including panels, brackets and holders for circuit boards and cable harnesses. Custom-engineered machine enclosures can be delivered disassembled, staged and kit-packed ready for the assembly line. Also, precision heavy steel metal can be fabricated up to 80,000 lbs. with thicknesses up to 20". Heavy castings can be re-engineered in heavy steel plate.

Searching for a way to cut costs without sacrificing product quality, Coldwell-Wilcox’s dedicated manufacturing engineers review every fabrication step for time savings and optimum materials usage before the first cut of metal is made. Our ability to work in anything from Auto-Cad to Micro CADAM Plus can improve new product engineering, reduce overall costs, ensure built-in quality and assist in product upgrades. By bringing engineering and management to the shop floor, Coldwell-Wilcox truly believes that its process is its product. Craftsmen have full access to engineers, schedulers and planners because management offices are very close to the production equipment, forming a co-located work team. These work teams deliver better products at lower costs, and, as your requirements change, they have the organizational flexibility to continually learn to do things more efficiently.

Metal Fabricating Facility Capabilities

The Metal Fabrication Operation has served the OEM Market for more than 50 years and consists of two departments producing both custom and general precision Sheet Metal and Heavy Plate Fabrications. Extended services include plate and fabricated product machining, and turnkey unit assembly prior to shipment. Both Sheet Metal and Heavy Plate departments are designed for low to medium volume lot sizes.

The Heavy Plate Department spans 36,000 square feet. With NC oxy-fuel and plasma cutting, 1,500-ton forming capacity and MIG (metal inert gas)/GMAW (gas metal arc welding), TIG (tungsten inert gas), SMAW (shielded metal arc welding), FCAW (flux cored arc welding), and SAW (submerged arc welding) welding processes, it is well-equipped for medium-to-heavy plate and structural fabricating. Weights up to 80,000 pounds and plate thicknesses through 8 inches are standard. Typical fabrications include machine beds and bases, columns, tables, rails, slides, rams, gear housings, platforms, frames and supports.

The Sheet Metal Department is a state-of-the-art sheet metal fabricating facility, utilizing CNC punching, laser cutting, MIG and TIG welding, and prime and finish painting. In a 90,000 square foot area, electronic control and power panel-type cabinets, hydraulic tanks, pans, machine shielding and enclosures, boxes, brackets, and general sheet through 0.25-inch thick material are fabricated.

Supporting both the Sheet Metal and Heavy Plate manufacturing crew is a highly qualified engineering and technical staff with more than a century of combined experience in metal and steel fabrications. To improve efficiency and quality of the process and resulting product, our Engineering staff uses CAD (Computer Aided Design) and CAM (Computer Aided Manufacturing), and CAPP (Computer Aided Process Planning). In addition to developing manufacturing process and fixtures, we offer complete cabinet and machine enclosure design.

The machining capabilities include a variety of drilling, milling and turning operations to produce mating parts incorporated in fabricated components and finish machined parts. Featured is a 3-axis CNC bridge gantry machining center for layout drilling and tapping, and milling of plate and structural machinery bases and platforms.
